Building conservation and urban design

These pages explain how our district's built environment is protected and enhanced, and provide guidance for those occupying or owning a listed building or a property in a conservation area.

The conservation team advises the development control team on planning applications affecting historic buildings and conservation areas.

They also systemically check the condition of the District's heritage, this goes back to 1998 at a national level with the birth of the English Heritage Buildings at Risk survey. English Heritage are responsible for producing a report on Grade I and II* buildings entitled Heritage at Risk Register 2014 - West Midlands. Lichfield District Council as part of an English Heritage pilot project has surveyed the Grade II listed structures within the District which makes up around 90% of all listed heritage. Please follow the link to access Lichfield District's Grade II Heritage at Risk survey report.
