  • You have a physical condition that means you cannot go to the polling station on election day.
  • Your employment means that you cannot go to the polling station on election day.
  • Your attendance on an educational course means that you cannot go to the polling station on election day.
  • You are a British citizen living overseas.

Who can vote on my behalf?

Anyone can be your proxy as long as they are eligible to vote in the election and they are willing to vote on your behalf. You cannot be a proxy for more than two people at any one election, unless they are a close relative.

Emergency proxies

There are certain circumstances where you can apply for an emergency proxy (see below) after the normal deadline, and up until 5pm on election day, if the emergency means that you cannot go to the polling  station in person.

  • In the case of a medical condition, illness or disability arising after the deadline for ordinary proxy applications (i.e. 5pm on the sixth working day before the poll).
  • If the person is a mental health patient detained under civil powers (i.e. who are not detained offenders).
  • If a person’s occupation, service or employment means they cannot go to the polling station in person and they became aware of this fact after the deadline for ordinary proxy applications (i.e. 5pm on the sixth working day before the poll).

The deadline for the receipt of Emergency Proxy Vote applications is 5pm on the day of the poll.

What if I want to vote by proxy in all future elections?

If you wish to vote by proxy for all future elections, as well as giving a reason you will need to have your application attested (for example, if you work away regularly, your employer may sign your form or if you are unable to visit your polling station because of some disability then your doctor could sign your form).

More information

Under new legislation, introduced on 1 January 2007, anyone applying for a postal or proxy vote needs to provide a signature specimen their date of birth as a security measure. If you are unable to sign in a consistent or distinctive way because of a disability you may be granted an exemption from doing so. This is called a waiver.
