Street cleansing services
We want our district to be a clean and pleasant place for everyone to enjoy. To keep it this way we regularly clean and remove litter from roughly 900,000 metres of roads, streets and green areas.
Our services include:
Regular street cleansing
A dedicated in-house team at the council carries out a range of street cleansing services across the district. The team cleans approximately 900,000 metres of streets throughout the district at various frequencies, ranging from once a day to once a year.
As well as streets, we clean gullies, car parks, public conveniences and other public areas to remove litter, build up of leaves, and anything else that could pose a risk to public health and safety.
We do this by using both mechanical sweepers which cleanse the roads and footpaths, and by hand, sweeping those areas that need it. There is also a quick response hit squad which deals with other cleansing problems on the highway, such as dumped rubbish and dog fouling.
Areas covered by the street cleansing service, over and above the normal street cleansing, are:
- Removal and investigations into incidents of fly-tipping (public highway and council owned land only)
- Syringe and sharps removal (council owned land only)
- Removal of dead animals on the public highway. Find out more.
- Supply, emptying and maintenance of street litter bins and dog waste bins
To help people clean up after themselves, we also provide and maintain litter bins across the district and empty these on a regular basis.
We take a hard line if we see anyone littering and issue fines to deter people from doing it again. Find out more.
