Sports Development

What the sports development team do

Lichfield District Council's Sports Development team provides coaching and promotes opportunities in a number of sports and physical activities under the Get in 2 it brand. Coaches are employed to deliver activity programmes in sports including, athletics, basketball, cricket, football, gymnastics, rugby, swimming and tennis. This includes activities in schools, local sports clubs and community facilities, including Burntwood Leisure Centre. The Sports Development team also provides coaching programmes for young people during the school holidays.

The team is a source of information on sports-related issues in the district; you may be new to the area and want to join a local cricket club, you may be a qualified coach and want to work in the community, you may want to find a football coaching course for your 6 year old child or you might be thinking about setting up your own class in aikido. If it's a question of sport, please contact us.

Find out more about our programme of Get in 2 it activities on our Active Lichfield website.

Activity in schools

Much of the work of the Sports Development team focuses on young people and therefore coaching often takes place in schools during curricular and extra-curricular time (breakfast clubs before school, lunch times or after school sessions). This could be used to provide cover for Planning, Preparation and Assessment (PPA) time.

Schools can contact the team for more information on what is available and costs; free taster sessions can be arranged. The Sports Development Officer can also provide support to schools in accessing funding for coaching, equipment and sports-related projects.

Support to sports clubs

The Sports Development team works closely with a number of local sports clubs and provides advice and support in areas such as funding, facility development, coach education, developing links to schools and the community and general club development issues, including club accreditation.

By working with voluntary sports clubs in this way the Sports Development team is in a position to promote quality clubs and refer potential new members.

We also maintain a Club Finder which allows visitors to the site to find clubs in the area. If you run a sports club in or around the district and would like to be included in the directory, or you are already listed and would like your details changing or adding to, you can fill in our online form.

Coach education

To be able to deliver the range of quality coaching programmes requires quality, qualified coaches. The Sports Development team is always looking for potential coaches and leaders to deliver programmes in the Lichfield district. We organise a range of coach education courses and workshops throughout the year. If you are a qualified sports coach interested in furthering your experience or if you would like to undertake coach education training in any sport, please contact the team
