Our empty homes policy
Our empty homes policy aims to reduce the number of long-term empty properties across the district.
While some homes are empty for valid reasons, such as probate or owners moving into care, others remain vacant for extended periods, creating issues for local communities.
Empty properties can attract vandalism, crime, and neglect, reducing property values and making neighborhoods less desirable.
Our focus is on working with owners of these homes to bring them back into use.
With rising housing demand and increasing pressure on local services, it is essential to make the best use of available housing stock.
Many empty homes could provide much-needed accommodation for local residents, helping to reduce homelessness and support the community.
By identifying and targeting long-term vacant properties, we aim to tackle housing shortages and improve the condition of neglected homes.
Our approach prioritises cooperation and suport for property owners, offering advice and assistance to help bring homes back into use.
However, in cases where owners are unresponsive or unwilling to act, we will consider enforcement measures such as compulsory purchase or enforced sale.
Our policy ensures a structured and fair approach to tackling empty homes, benefiting both homeowners and the wider community.
