Common questions and advice

An Article 4 Direction removes permitted development rights for certain things and the limitations change from area to area - for example in the Gaia Lane area (including St Chads Road) you cannot make changes to your boundary walls without planning permission, and in the Lichfield City centre area, you cannot paint the outside of your building without planning permission – find more about the various restrictions in Article 4 areas across the district

If you want to do something that is not permitted in an area covered by an Article 4 Direction, you will need to apply for planning permission

If you would like us to look at your plans before you submit a planning application, we recommend you consider using our planning advice service which start from £100 for householder advice. Apply online

If you don't have draft plans yet, but have a general enquiry, you can submit a planning enquiry which costs £90 including VAT and our team will get back to you within 3 working days.

This section includes some useful information as a guide, but we woudl always recommend you seek advice from our team before starting works.
