A Burntwood mum who ‘always thinks of others before herself’ has won a year’s free family membership to the district’s leisure centres after winning a competition run by Active Leisure at Lichfield District Council.

Earlier this month, residents were asked to nominate someone they considered worthy of winning the prize, community heroes who go above and beyond and deserve to be recognised.

Mum-of-two Claire Mee, 43, was nominated by her friend Abbie Fisher and selected by Active Leisure staff to receive the prize from the anonymised submissions.

Abbie, 41, also from Burntwood, said:

“I wanted to nominate Claire for everything she has been through in recent months.

“She has been affected by cancer and come through it. Hopefully this leisure centre membership will help her enjoy some special family time with her kids.

“Claire always thinks of others before herself. She is a very selfless person and winning this prize is nice for her – she thoroughly deserves it.”

Claire, who is mum to Daisy, 12, and Teddy, 7, said:

“I am really very grateful to Abbie for the nomination.

“It was a lovely surprise. To have a family membership is not something we would be able to afford ordinarily - it will be nice for me and the kids to visit together.”

A spokesperson for Lichfield District Council said:

“A huge thank you to everyone who entered our Active Leisure competition earlier this month – we were inundated with fantastic nominees.

“Many congratulations to Claire – we all hope you and your family enjoy your family membership to the district’s leisure centres.”
