Come and join the Tiny Forests Community Day on Thursday

St Michael Road in Lichfield has a Tiny Forest.

People in Lichfield District are invited to join an event maintaining the district’s Tiny Forests on Thursday 21 September.

The Tiny Forests have been established by Severn Trent Water as small ecological havens at five locations - Christ Church Open Space, St Michael Road, Mesnes Green, Burntwood Park and Redwood Park.

The community day on Thursday will see volunteers care for the Tiny Forests by weeding, measuring tree growth and looking at how citizen science research can be carried out at the sites.

It has been more than a year since the areas were planted and the hot and wet weather has resulted in significant tree growth, but the weeds have grown too.

At the events, volunteers can learn about how best to care for and nurture a Tiny Forest, about the wildlife within, how trees can capture and store carbon from the air we breathe, the forest’s ability to store water and the cooling benefits of trees.

Volunteers are recommended to wear long sleeves and long trousers, footwear suitable for the outdoors and prepare for all weathers. Gardening gloves will be provided but volunteers are welcome to bring their own.

Participation in the community days is free but organisers request that volunteers book a space via Eventbrite for the Tiny Forest venue they wish to attend:

Further details including the event times are included in the links for each venue.

A spokesperson for Lichfield District Council said:

“The Tiny Forests have developed well at sites across the Lichfield District and the community events are a great opportunity to meet the teams backing the initiative from Severn Trent and Earthwatch Europe while enjoying a few hours helping with a nature activity.

“If you can make it on Thursday come along and join in.”
