Lichfield Proms in Beacon Park celebrated its 25th year on Saturday (7 September) and although heavy rain fell, fans were undeterred bringing their picnics and chairs to enjoy the wonderful music on offer.
More than 10,000 people joined the celebration where they were entertained by The City of Lichfield Concert Band playing a mix of popular classics and The British Police Symphony Orchestra whose programme included music from Bernstein’s West Side Story and Schonberg’s Les Miserables.
The event culminated in a rousing finale featuring Proms favourites Rule Britannia, Jerusalem and Pomp and Circumstance No 1 and a spectacular fireworks display.
This special Proms was a great success but it would not take place without the support of generous sponsors including Platinum sponsor Zest Education, Gold sponsors BHB Architects and Strongs Plastic Products, Silver sponsors Rotary Club of Lichfield St Chad, Lichfield Chamber of Trade and Commerce and Prizm Solutions and Bronze sponsors Adcocks Solicitors, Keelys Solicitors and Beacon Street Garage. Thanks also to Lichfield City Council and Swinfen Broun Charitable Trust for supporting the event with grants.
Lichfield District Council’s Deputy Leader and Cabinet Member for Leisure and Major Projects, Councillor Andy Smith, said:
“Fans of Lichfield Proms in Beacon Park look forward to the event all year and they again came in their thousands to enjoy the music and atmosphere.
“I would like to thank our sponsors, the musicians, the compere Danny Mizon, and all the council’s staff and volunteers who worked so hard to set up the event and tidy up afterwards.
“On behalf of Lichfield District Council I also wish to send our condolences to the family and friends of the singer Ben Thapa. Ben had been due to perform at this year’s Proms but was taken ill shortly before the event. We are very saddened to learn that he has since passed away.”
